Compliance with the HIPAA Privacy Rules

On August 14, 2002, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Issued it's final regulations regarding the privacy rules applicable to individually identifiable health information under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Most employer-sponsored health plans are required to be in compliance with the new rules by April 14, 2003. However, small plans (defined as plans with annual receipts of $5 million or less) have until April 14, 2004 to comply.
