Client Alert: US Supreme Court Holds That Copyrights Must Be Registered in Order to Sue for Infringement

On March 4, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that you must have registered your copyright in the U.S. Copyright Office before you can sue for infringement of the copyright. The Supreme Court rejected the rule adopted by several lower courts which allowed one to sue for infringement if an application has been submitted to the Copyright Office.
