Freeborn & Peters LLP Attorney Received a Summary Judgment in Favor of a Firm Client

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Lee Preston recently awarded a summary judgment in favor of Freeborn & Peters LLP’s client, a leading global provider of enterprise market information solutions, in an employment case which would have gone to trial later this month.

In the lawsuit, two former employees claimed the progressive disciplinary policy language in the company’s employee handbook gave them certain contractual rights that were violated when they were terminated. The former employees also claimed they had contractual rights to certain severance benefits. However, Judge Preston disagreed, stating that the plaintiffs could not have had a reasonable belief that the handbook was a contract. He also stated the plaintiffs had insufficient evidence supporting the argument that they were entitled to the severance benefits they sought.

Freeborn & Peters LLP attorney Helen Baker was primarily responsible for the case.
