Environment and Energy
We advise and represent corporations in multiple industries to mitigate risk and resolve disputes related to emerging, as well as long-standing, issues in environment and energy law. Our practice approaches environment and energy matters as business issues to be resolved as opposed to ends in themselves.

In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of the effects that lifestyle changes and business practices have had on the environment, including fracking, electronic waste, retail product returns, green marketing, vapor intrusion, radioactive waste from medical devices and drilling operations and greenhouse gases. These areas and many others have faced increased regulatory scrutiny, as well as ever-growing diversity of litigation in environmental law and toxic torts. This means companies in all industries need educated environmental legal counsel to help them navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and to develop strategies that minimize legal risks and advance the interests of the business. We are positioned to assist where energy and environmental law intersect on such issues as greenhouse gas emissions, climate change regulation, and environmental and natural resource assessments of energy infrastructure projects.
We also represent industrial and large institutional clients before state and federal energy regulators, covering such diverse matters as energy acquisitions, utility strategies, and energy battery storage, enjoying an excellent track record for reducing the energy costs for businesses.
At Freeborn, we have assembled a diverse group of environment and energy law practitioners whose skills range from the traditional areas - such as Superfund, hazardous and solid waste, PCBs, the Clean Air Act, and Brownfields - to emerging areas - such as naturally occurring radioactive materials, RINS, landfill gas, vapor intrusion, renewable energy, data centers, and electronic waste. Our lawyers also possess hard-to-find experience in the zoning and permitting of waste disposal and treatment facilities, the nuances of landfill gas projects, PCB clean-ups, and the intricacies of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Freeborn's Environment practice has been ranked by Chambers & Partners, most recently in the 2022 guide.
The group regularly posts on their Blog, Environmental Law Next, which is designed to keep readers informed of what is coming in the environmental space so that companies are prepared for any legal issues that might develop.
