Michael Freeborn Quoted in Law360 on Chicago Pension Lawsuit

On July 9, the city of Chicago urged an Illinois judge to uphold a state law designed to plug a $10 billion hole in the city’s pension system, arguing that the statute doesn’t run afoul of a provision in the state constitution that bars cuts to public workers’ benefits. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a decision by the Illinois Supreme Court in which a group of state pensioners, represented in part by Freeborn & Peters, successfully swayed the court to decide that proposed state pension cuts violated the state constitution. As with the state case, Freeborn is also representing the plaintiffs in the Chicago matter.

Law360 recently spoke with founding Partner Michael Freeborn regarding the ongoing litigation. “The city believes its present financial problems — which are largely of its own making — are bigger than constitutional principles," Michael told the reporter. The article published on July 9 and is titled "Chicago Fights to Salvage Pension Reform Law."
