Asian Domain Name Fraud Warning

A number of our clients have forwarded e-mails to us that they have received from an apparent Asian domain name registrar. The e-mail looks official and is professional and courteous. It states that the Asian registrar has received a request from another company asking to register a list of domain names that include the client's name. The Asian registrar claims that it is protecting the client from having another company register these domain names and that they are offering the client an opportunity to register the domains. The e-mail often includes a short deadline within which to respond before the Asian registrar transfers the domain names to the other company. A sample of the email is as follows:

Dear CEO,

We are the department of Asian Domain dispute registration service in China. We have something need to confirm with you. We formally received an application on February 6, 2009. One company which called "ACME Co., Ltd." are applying to register "clientname" as internet brand and following CN/ASIA domain names below:

clientname.com.cn
clientname.net.cn
clientname.org.cn
clientname.hk
clientname.tw
clientname.com.tw
clientname.asia

Internet brand keyword: clientname

After our initial examination, we found that the internet brand applied for registration are as same as your company's name and trademark. If your company and this "ACME Co., Ltd." As the same company, there is no need reply to us. We will accept their application and will register those for them immediately.

If your company has no relationships with that company nor do not authorized, please reply to us within 7 workdays, if we can't get any information from yours over 7 workdays, we will unconditionally approve the application submitted by "ACME Co., Ltd."
